How can I help my rescued Dane adapt to life with her new family?
2 weeks ago we took a about 12 months old male Great Dane our house. We know nothing about his past and was abandoned at the roadside. understandably, has huge problems of separation anxiety and has become overattached me. who likes my husband, 3 teenagers and our female DANE 18 months, but it is velcro for me! cries, barks, groans and shudders when separated from me. that can open any camera to get to me, and if packaged, performed until released or sold. exercised regularly, played with, packed only at night, and is part of the family. it needs to be tied outside shorter so I can have a break from it and to allow extra time "outside." I have tried toy, ignoring him until he calms down (not calm), a bark collar, light discipline, …… verbal reproach What else?
It is rare for a dog to bond to any person within two weeks. He can hold on to you because he feels something akin to a past experience, and in a strange house which are the most reliable I can find. The reality with a rescue dog whose backround is not known, it could take months for your dog to calm down and trust her again home. We must remember that he has no idea where it is, that all of you and what's happening in your life. If your past experiences were less than pleasant, it can take more time for him to trust his good fortune. Dogs remember, and can be very sensitive. They have the rest of his family begin to work with the dog. Have a different member to give to eat each day, food that is not associated with any particular person. The rest will just be patience. He could calm the next week or month that comes. If you fear for their safety due to this problem, you may want to consider some holistic remedies that "take the edge off and calm him down a bit when you're not close.
